A tradition this old deserves an institution built to match it
The work is needed, achievable and begun. It can be advanced by donors, scholars, universities and students, each in a distinct way.
What the series looks like
About ninety minutes online: a lecture of forty to forty-five minutes, a conversation with the convenor, then questions from the audience. Sessions are recorded with the speaker’s permission, and a short reading list is circulated beforehand.
What the Institute welcomes
Work from every discipline that touches the field: history, religious studies, law, literature, anthropology, art and architecture. Every position is stated in terms its adherents would accept before it is evaluated.
Who the Institute works with
Universities, seminaries, libraries and research centres in India and North America. The Institute is an institute of American Islamic College and shares its academic governance.

Take the Spring 2027 course
Islam in Local Contexts: India runs on Wednesday evenings from 20 January to 28 April 2027, live online, for three credits, cross-listed for undergraduates and graduates. Registration opens through American Islamic College when the spring schedule goes live on 15 November 2026.
